Alliance Children's Week Guide

This is a guide for those that have questions or need help on the quest given during Children's Week.
This quest is started in (for the Alliance) Stormwind City's Cathedral Square, the quest giver is to the right of the giant Cathedral.
Once you start this quest you recieve a orphan whistle which is used to call and dismiss your orphan.
Your orphan can only be male (as far as I know) and there is only a Orc (Horde only) and Human version (Alliance only), no Dwarves, undead, etc. orphans.
Everytime you complete one of these 5 tasks (excluding the first one of summoning your orphan and talking to it), you will recieve 650 experience.
The quest itself requires you to (for the Alliance) visit 3 places so the orphan can see various things:

*The order is not important*
1. One of the places to visit is the Darnassus' bank, which is right in the center or Darnassus (or just ask a patrol for directions)
2. Another one of the places you need to visit is the Lighthouse in Westfall, which is located off the beach just a few feet away on a small island (at the bottom left corner)
3. The last place you need to visit with your orphan is Stonewrought Dam in Loch Modan (see below)

After you visit all three of these places (each place is actually its own quest given to you by your orphan), your orphan will give you two more quests to do, in these two quests you need to:

1. Visit with your orphan to Theramore Isle where you need to talk to Jaina Proudmoore and get her autograph (see below)
2. And you need to buy your orphan some Ice Cream which can be found, not in the Shimmering Flats like the quest says, but at an NPC in Stormwind right beside the bank's mailbox. (Do NOT buy ice cream from other players because most of them charge around 1g when you can get 5 for 5 silver from the Special Treats NPC.)

Stonewrought Dam - to get to this Dam, just fly to Thelsamar and follow the road north. When you reach near the top of the zone, head east and you will see the Dam (the only monsters here are around level 12). Just walk down the Dam to the center and this task will become completed.

Jaina Proudmoore - The easiest way to get here if you havent been here before is to travel to the Wetlands and take the boat that brings you to the Isle. Jaina Proudmoore is in the large castle in the center at the top.

After you complete these tasks (total of 5 quests) you can return to the quest giver in Stormwind's Cathedral Square and you will recieve one of these prizes:

Hunter Pets Guide

We get this question at least once a day on the forums: "What is the best pet?" The answer is complicated and it's silly to be saying "it depends" all the time, and tiresome to continually point people at Petopia, so I thought I'd make this thread to lay the question to rest. It's a culmination of data drawn from experience, the data collection of the Good Intentions Guild and Petopia, and the input of the many hunters on this forum. Hopefully, it will finally be some kind of definitive response to the question, "I've got this new spell, now what should I tame?"

The answer, as so many do, begins with another question: What kind of pet do you want? Hunter pets break down into three basic categories.

Tank pets take a lot of hits without flinching, while you lay on the damage. They're a good choice for leveling, because they don't have much problem surviving long battles or adds.

DPS pets deal more damage than other pets but tend to be a little flimsy. They're nearly a must-have for serious PvPers, because in PvP people don't really attack your pets, so their tanking function is basically moot and you want to squeeze out as much damage as you can.

Middle-of-the-road pets are pretty sturdy and decent damage-dealers, but not exceptional at either. They're good pets for players who ask a lot of different things from them - solo PvE one day, guild Warsong game the next - and need them to perform well whenever.

Keep in mind that these are general inclinations, not hard and fast laws. An owl can tank perfectly well if you spec it for that - it's just that it will never be able to take quite as much punishment as a tank-specced bear. That's important so I'll say it again: The difference between different classes of pet is less than 5%, so the most important thing is to find something that suits your playstyle, that's easy for you to feed and that you don't mind looking at.

MY OVERALL, BROAD SWEEPING RECS

If you don't have the patience to consider all the info I'm about to dump on you and then pick your own pet, here's my advice.

If you want something that will take a beating for you while you do all the damage, get a bear or a boar.
If you want something that will chew off faces in PvP, get a cat. Probably the Rake, Broken Tooth or a Frostsaber Cat, depending on your level.
If you want something that will do pretty well in any situation, get a wolf or a vulture.

SOME INITIAL CONCERNS

There used to be two other things we worried about when choosing a pet - attack speed and pursuit speed. Pursuit speed has been negated by the 1.8 patch, so if you care if your pet can catch something, all you should look at is the ability to learn Dive/Dash. If you're a serious PvPer this is a skill you MUST have.

Attack speed is still around, though, at least for now, and here's what it means. Most pets attack at 2.0. Some, mostly cats, have faster attack speeds, making them great for caster interrupts in PvP. There is a school of thought, however, that favors 2.0 attack cats, because Prowl multiplies the first hit the cat makes out of stealth, and a slower cat gains a greater bonus from this.

A BREAKDOWN OF THE SEVENTEEN FAMILIES OF PET

The following sections owe a great debt to Bamoo and Mania of Petopia, whence much of this information is drawn. Their dedication and generosity in gathering and sharing pet data with the hunter community is humbling and awesome. Some data is also taken from the Good Intentions Guild, who also rock.

Health: At 60. "High" is around 3300, "medium" around 3000, and "low" around 2800. Remember that magic ignores armor, so health may be more important to your tank or raid pet than armor.
Armor: At 60. "High" is around 3900, "medium" around 3700, and "low" around 3500.
DPS: At 60. "High" is around 54, "medium" around 50, and "low" around 47.
Diet: The more things a pet eats, the easier it is to feed, particularly at low levels when getting an appropriate vendor is hard. Meat, fish and bread are the easiest foods to come by, in that order, because meat drops and most innkeepers sell it, fish can be fished, and bread can be conjured. Fungus is very hard to find Alliance side, cheese is fairly rare Horde side, and fruit in general is rare.
Abilities: Of Dash/Dive, Bite and Claw, what this pet can learn (all pets can learn Growl and Cower).
Family ability: The special attack only this type of pet can learn.
Special mobs: Any members of this family that stand out from the rest, for one reason or another.

When and where do I tame my pets at?

Although I do not have a complete list with me, I can reference you to a guide that strategically tells you what pets to tame and when to tame pets with the famous hunter leveling guide by Mancow, you can get it here for a small price, I think it's well worth it in my opinion.

TANK PETS

Bears

Health: High
Armor: Medium
DPS: Low
Diet: Bread, cheese, fish, fruit, fungus, meat
Abilities: Bite, claw
Family ability: None to date

Bears are a classic tank choice. The ability to learn both bite and claw means they can generate more hate than their low base DPS suggests, and there's nothing you can carry that they won't eat. They're also available at pretty much every level of the game, making them easy to pick up at any time. Their main weakness is the lack of Dash, and they're still waiting on a defining ability. Also, if you care about that sort of thing, their animations are pathetic. No idles, no sitting, and their jaws never close. Go ask a druid friend to take his form, and get a look at his face. Yeah, bears look like that.

Special mobs: In Winterspring lives the white bear Ursius, with an amazingly slow 2.4 attack speed, and even slower are the young forest bears of Elwynn at 2.5. This means a pet that hits less often but for bigger crits, which can make for better aggro control. Thanks to Bram and Durex for this tip.
If you really like the white bear look and can't wait 'till Winterspring, there are two white bears in Dun Morogh - Mangeclaw, a level 11 quest mob on a maybe 40 second respawn timer, and Bjarn, a level 12 rare spawn. If you're Horde this is one hell of a long walk, good luck.

Boars

Health: Medium-high (baseline +4%)
Armor: Medium-high (baseline +4%)
DPS: Low
Diet: Bread, cheese, fish, fruit, fungus, meat
Abilities: Bite, Dash
Family ability: Charge

Boars are the fast tank. Both charge and dash let them pick up the pace to catch or pre-empt an opponent, and the AP bonus from charge can provide a nice opener. There's a lot to be said for a pet who can root your foe anywhere you want. Their broad diet is another nice plus. And if you want a unique pet, boars are completely unique among beasts for their medium-high armor and medium-high health. Auzduk would also like me to remind you that boars have more idle animations than average and generally show a fair amount of personality, comparable to tallstriders, wolves or cats (although like most pets, they don't have a swimming animation).

Special mobs: In Razorfen Kraul, there are a particular set of boars which wear armor. This is just a visual thing, it doesn't actually affect their stats at all, but many hunters find the idea of an armored boar really damn cool, and they can be pretty imposing at higher levels. These are the Rotting, Raging, and Plain-Old Agam'ar boars.

Crabs

Health: Low
Armor: High
DPS: Medium
Diet: Bread, fish
Abilities: Claw
Family ability: None to date

Crabs are rare, but have a few things to recommend them. They hold their own well in a fight with Claw and moderate DPS. They're very easy to feed if you like fishing, and they have a low profile making them easier to see over in combat. Plus they're huge at 60, which is kind of nifty to see. Their low health makes them less effective defensively against casters, though, and they suffer from a lack of distinctive abilities and relative world rarity.

Special mobs: All crabs are created equal. The only restriction to picking one up is that you should try to do so by your mid-40s, as they disappear from the gameworld at that point.

Crocolisks

Health: Low
Armor: High
DPS: Medium
Diet: Fish, meat
Abilities: Bite
Family ability: None to date

You won't see many hunters with crocs, and it's mostly for one reason: they make this noise, sort of a broken-vacuum-y rasp, ALL THE TIME. It's like this CONSTANT Darth Vader-cum-Iron Lung thing following you around. Most hunters hate it, and those who don't mind often get grief from raid buddies who do. If you don't mind it, though, you've got a unique pet with a low profile and a nasty bite.

Special mobs: Crocs all have the same stats after taming. However, there is a white croc skin found only in three places: the Wailing Caverns, on a rare in Dustwallow, and on a simply huge creature called the Sewer Beast, a level 50 croc who lives in the Stormwind Canal. No seriously. He's very, very rare, but a great deal of fun to tame, because hey, you've tamed a croc that grew to enormous size in the sewers, and how many hunters can say that?

Gorillas

Health: High
Armor: Low
DPS: Medium
Diet: Fruit, fungus
Abilities: Bite
Family ability: Thunderstomp

Gorillas are a late-level pet, not showing up until STV. They're unusually good tanks due to their AoE and medium DPS, and can often hold a group of mobs against a Volley or Multishot. They also have more animations than average, which annoys some and pleases others. Con-wise, their diet is a pain in the ass, but the biggest drawback IMO? You can't tame A-Me, the quest robot gorilla in Un'Goro. How cool would that be? CYBER-APE OF DOOM!

Special mobs: There aren't any really special apes, apart from A-me, who as I said you can't tame. /sad But worthy of note is the red-skinned U'cha, a named quest mob found in a cave in Un'goro crater. I bring him up because he's the highest-level ape in the game, and not a huge hassle for a 60 hunter who decides she wants some simian artillery, and because he's not mentioned on Petopia, so those who stop looking there might miss him.

Scorpids

Health: Medium
Armor: High
DPS: Low
Diet: Meat
Abilities: Claw
Family ability: Scorpid poison

The big thing to be aware of with scorpids is scorpid poison, which will break crowd control and keep things chasing you longer than they otherwise would, should you choose to run. A low profile and some very slick skins make this a visually enticing choice, however.

Special mobs: Death Flayer, a scorpid in Durotar, has a fast 1.6 attack speed. If you're Alliance and interested in him, or any other scorpid at that level, you're in for a bit of a hike, as they live in mostly Horde areas until the 30s.

Tallstriders

Health: High
Armor: Low
DPS: Medium
Diet: Cheese, fruit, fungus
Abilities: Bite, dash
Family ability: None to date

The key to the tallstrider is dash. They're fast and durable, with medium DPS to keep the attention of your enemies. They also have some neat idle animations and some bright, attractive skins. On the flip side, they suffer from an annoying diet and a lack of a family ability.

Special mobs: Tallstriders have a couple of interesting variations. There are two unique skins, the bright pink flamingo-like Mazzranache of Mulgore and the blue and orange Clutchmother in Darkshore. People may warn you off Mazz, but it means they missed the last patch - he used to have a slower-than-normal pursuit speed, but pet pursuit has been normalized so have no fear about picking him up. Also worth checking out are Ornery Plainstriders, which dwell in the Barrens and enjoy a 1.3 attack speed.

Turtles

Health: Medium
Armor: High
DPS: Low
Diet: Fruit, fungus
Abilities: Bite
Family ability: Shell shield

Turtles are durable, and shell shield gives them that last extra bit of life against a particularly brutal opponent or when you need them to off-tank for just a few seconds more (although if you're going to use that skill, please wait until 1.10. Trust me). And who doesn't love to say "chelonian"? But there are a few things to keep in mind. Turtles are bigger than you think they are, and can block your view, and though their listed DPS isn't meaningfully lower than a scorpid's or a boar's, they don't have charge or poison to make up the difference. This means they can have trouble keeping a mob's attention, especially if you use shell shield.

Special mobs: A turtle is a turtle is a turtle. For now, there are no unusual chelonians, not even a unique skin (see, I told you "chelonian" is fun to say).

DPS PETS

Bats

Health: Medium
Armor: Low
DPS: High
Diet: Fruit, fungus
Abilities: Bite, dive
Family ability: Screech

Bats are often considered a good PvP pet. Screech is a useful debuff to have when you're flapping over the flag where everyone's clustered, and many players enjoy the large obstruction to visibility caused by the wingspan and hover height of this pet.

Special Mobs: The bat family has one great hero: the Bloodseeker Bat, a resident of Zul'Gurub. With a blazing 1.0 attack speed and a lighting fast pursuit speed, this was once the must-have beast for endgame PvP. Since the speed normalization, he chases only as fast as Dive can take him, but his attack speed remains and is nothing to sneer at.

Cats

Health: Medium
Armor: Low
DPS: High
Diet: Fish, meat
Abilities: Bite, claw, dash
Family ability: Prowl

Cats are a perennial favorite, and looking at their stats it's easy to see why. They can learn more abilities than any other pet by picking up all three of the general abilities. They dish out a lot of damage and are easy to feed. Prowl appeals to night elves who can shadowmeld along with their pets, and even to other hunters who just want to feign dead and take a quick bathroom break undetected. And visually, cats offer more selection than any other family, with detailed body renderings, dozens of skins, natural and varied animations, and several models. The only reason not to choose a cat, apart from RP reasons, is that everyone has one, if that's the sort of thing that bothers you, and a lot of players, particularly other hunters, will give you a lot of crap with "oh, another moonstalker. How nice."

Special mobs: Wow, there are so many cats of note I'm hardly sure where to start. Most famous is Broken Tooth, the badlands cougar with the incredible 1.0 attack speed. Then there's the Rake, a level 10 Mulgore lion who clocks at 1.2, and Humar, the unique and beautiful black lion of the Barrens with a 1.3 attack speed. Then there're Echeyakee and Sian-Rotam, who share the otherwise unique luminescent white lion skin. Araga, a cougar in the Alterac Mountains, has a unique skin as well. And finally, in Winterspring you'll find Rak'Shiri, Shy-Rotam and Frostsaber Pride Watchers, which have a 1.5 attack, unusual skins, and the same high-shouldered mesh as the night elves' mounts. Shy-Rotam and Echeyakee are both spawned only by Horde-exclusive quests, so it can be a bit of a coup for an Alliance player to have one.

Owls

Health: Medium
Armor: Low
DPS: High
Diet: Meat
Abilities: Claw, dive
Family ability: Screech

Owls, much like bats, are valued for their ability to get in people's way in PvP. They're also a popular choice because they're simply quite beautiful, even though there are only two skins. They're also oddly rare in the gameworld for about thirty levels, living in Teldrassil at less then ten and then not appearing again until Felwood in the forties. Thus, an owl is a sign of some prestige for young Horde hunters, who have to travel to the most protected place in Azeroth to get one.

Special mobs: The only unique owl is Olm the Wise. He's just an ordinary owl after taming, but it can be kind of entertaining to do so, as he has membership with the Cenarion Circle. You must be "at war" with them in order to tame him (which doesn't hurt your rep with them). Name him Olm and parade him in front of the druids, just for fun.

Raptors

Health: Low
Armor: Medium
DPS: High
Diet: Meat
Abilities: Bite, claw
Family ability: None to date

No one is quite sure why raptors don't have Dash, but so long as that's true, they'll remain less popular than cats. Still, if you want to rip something to shreds, the raptor will serve you well, with high DPS and the capacity to learn both bite and claw. They also seem to have a modicum of draconic intelligence, since most of them wear jewelry. I find this weird, and it's the reason I've never had one. The only real reason to recommend against them, though, is that they're a little flimsier than other DPS choices due to a low health.

Special mobs: Takk the Leaper is a sleek raptor in the Barrens with a mostly unique black skin (it's also found on raptors in WC). He used to be prized for his fast pursuit speed, but since normalization, he's just another raptor.

Spiders

Health: Medium
Armor: Low
DPS: High
Diet: Meat
Abilities: Bite
Family ability: None to date

Spiders have only marginally less visual variation than cats, with "spindly" and "furry" variations and brilliant, colorful skins. Despite a lack of combat abilities, they can actually be an unexpectedly strong asset in PvP. First, spire spiderlings have a 1.5 attack, good for casters, but more because the spindly spiders look so damn real that they do freak out players who are IRL afraid of spiders, and can throw them off their game. I've seen it happen. Of course the flip side is, having the thing with you all the time might freak you out a bit. Not a pet for the phobic.

Special mobs: There are two spiders of note. The Spire Spiderling, in Blackrock Spire, has a fast 1.5 attack speed, and a startling blue skin found only on one other spider. The level 27 Naraxis, of Duskwood, is a spindly creature with a unique red skin.

Windserpents

Health: Medium
Armor: Low
DPS: High
Diet: Bread, cheese, fish
Abilities: Bite, dive
Family ability: Lightning breath

Windserpents are sort of an odd man out, when it comes to hunter pets. They have this ranged attack that isn't really ranged, because they can't stand next to you and spit. They're widely believed to be "weak" - this is partly true, because most wind serpents seem to suffer from what Petopia calls "caster stats" - a pet with above-average Int and Spirit but unusually low Stamina and Strength. And then there are the sons of Hakkar, which change skins every time you summon them (although there's a possibility that this behavior will be changed in an upcoming patch). Altogether they're a generally weird pet.

But they do have the ability to attack from range, something available to no other pet. And they're flying snakes. So they're not a pet without substantial merit. Just do yourself a favor, and before you tame one, swing by Petopia and make sure it doesn't have caster stats.

Special mobs: As I mentioned, keep an eye out for the Sons of Hakkar found in Zul'Gurub. Every time you summon them they'll have a different skin. Another nice catch from Wailing Caverns is the Deviate Dreadfang, with its unique "black" skin (it's blue, but people call it black, because they're odd, and because Bliz did it first when they named the skin file).

MIDDLE-OF-THE-ROAD PETS

Carrion birds

Health: Medium
Armor: Medium
DPS: Medium
Diet: Fish, meat
Abilities: Bite, claw, dive
Family ability: Screech

Carrion birds are widely and wildly underrated. They have that vision-obstruction thing going on, which can be good or bad, depending on your perspective, and the fish in their diet makes caring for them much easier. More pertinent, they, in my opinion, take the best advantage of Screech. Screech causes massive aggro in the mobs that it hits, making it effectively an AoE taunt, and the carrion bird, with its higher armor, is the most equipped of the fliers to handle that. With both Claw and Bite, they can put out a lot of damage, which equals more aggro and faster mob death. The blue one's not bad-looking either.

Special mobs: The most underrated pet in the game in my opinion is the overlooked Spiteflayer. A 1.2 attack speed carrion bird, she can learn claw, bite, dive, and screech, obstruct the opposition's view, fly harmlessly over lava, and take a sound beating without even blinking. Yeah, she's kind of ugly, but even that can be a plus, if you're a hordie who wants to keep that "savage" flavor.

Hyenas

Health: Medium
Armor: Medium
DPS: Medium
Diet: Fruit, meat
Abilities: Bite, dash
Family ability: None to date

The hyena is fairly unremarkable, just an average critter with no family skill. However, it has both sounds and visuals that might recommend it to the aesthete who's not after the min/max - there are white, black, purple and red hyenas, and they have a kind of cool little laugh. I'd like them more if they had a realistic diet (as in, eating not just your food but your armor, too, if you want to feed it to 'em).

Special mobs: For a unique red skin and a 1.5 attack, try taming a scarlet tracking hound out of Scarlet Monastary. Or look up Ravager, a level 51 purple hyena, and enjoy a 1.3 attack speed pet.

Wolves

Health: Medium
Armor: Medium
DPS: Medium
Diet: Meat
Abilities: Bite, dash
Family ability: Furious howl

Saved the best for last. =)

Not really, but wolves are my personal pick. They have as many rich animations and as complex a model rendering as cats, they're fast when they need to be, and furious howl is IMO the best ability in the pack (partly because, right now, it causes a bit of AoE aggro, although this may be a bug). Also, after cats, they have the widest variety of <2.0 attack speeds, so at almost any level, you can pick up a pet that will serve you well in the wild and in the occasional battleground between quests. And they DANCE! (Although you do need a shaman friend or an MPQ reader to witness that).

Special mobs: There are several special wolves out there. I should touch on Snarler; this snazzy black rare was the first big-name hunter pet, because he had high innate magical resistance which he retained once trained. Bliz patched that out pretty quick, but he's still a good-looking dog (although a vilebranch raiding wolf looks the same, attacks at 1.7, and isn't on an insane spawn timer). Ghostpaw alphas are another strong choice, with a 1.3 attack speed and pre-trained Bite and Furious Howl. Deathmaw, and his much younger cousins the slavering worgs, at 1.2 attack, are the fastest attacking wolf, and any canine afficianado will eventually have to tame the bloodaxe worg found in Blackrock Spire, as it's the only source of Bite 8 and Furious Howl 4.
One other wolf to know about is Lupos, a rare Duskwood spawn. In the wild, his bite does shadow damage (which ignores damage reduction from armor). This made him a great PvP pet, unexpectedly deadly to warriors and pallies used to ignoring our furry/scaly/feathered or chitinous friends. He was normalized with pet speed, though, and now deals physical damage after taming.

OKAY, STILL NOT HELPFUL.

Right, then. Your Very First Pet:

Get a bear or a boar.

Seriously, ignore those scorpids and moonstalkers and lions and raptors and pretty white snow leopards. They're nothing but trouble. You're level 10. You're buying arrows and getting three silver a quest turn-in. You don't have cash to be spending on pet food. You want something that you can feed that spider meat or the sunfish you just pulled out of the river or the tasty muffins you got as a quest reward that you'll never ever eat, anything you can find.

Actually if you want the snow leopard grab it now, because you do not want to be leveling it up later. But for a transitory pet, the most important thing for a low-level hunter is the convenience of the omnivorous diet.

AND FOR MY SECOND PET?

Okay, let's talk stable slots.

We only get two. Theoretically, this means three pets - two stabled, one active, right? Well, theory's nice and all, but that's not how it works. In actuality, a couple things cut down on our ability to play World of Pokemon:

In order to learn a new rank of a pet ability, you have to train it off a pet in the wild. In order to train a pet in the wild, you must currently have no pet. Ergo, if i rather like my Feral Nightsaber, and don't want to lose him, but i need to teach him the next rank of Bite, i have to stick him in the stable and go find a spider or something.

So, until you've learned every rank of every active ability, you're effectively limited to two permanent pets, since you need that last slot free for temporary teaching trains.

Another thing to keep in mind is that leveling pets is a pain in the ass. Every time you ding you have to wait for your pet to catch up, and if there's a large level gap, you can spend hours upon hours, sometimes days at high levels, trying to close it. And pets in the stable gain no XP, so if you travel with your boar for a week or so, your owl's going to fall a few levels behind. By the time you've gotten him caught up, your boar will be lagging. It is possible to keep two pets at the same level as yourself, but not if you have any interest in your own speedy advancement and fight mostly yellow or harder mobs.

--A Quick Note on Pet Leveling--
Pets do not gain XP from quest turn-ins or from exploring new areas. I don't have any conclusive data on whether or not they gain the bonus group XP or bonus XP from a rested state. What this means is don't quest, don't explore, and just to be safe, don't get too rested if you don't want to outstrip a pet you're trying to level.
HOWEVER if the pet is far behind you, you probably will want to travel with a group, because a pet at less than about 90% of your level is nearly useless when soloing, particularly as you get close to 60.

Happiness at least is easy to get up quickly, though - just do a little BG. It seems pets gain 1000 happiness on every rez in the BGs. Hello loyalty!
--End Quick Note on Pet Leveling--

Alright, Meen, so you're telling me I'm looking at two pets?
Yes!

Well, no.

I reccomend sticking to just one pet, until at least level 40. Despite the different categories of pet, all pets are essentially face-chewing tanks. With Beastmastery spec, in particular, any pet used properly is a strong PvE ally who will beat on things and get beat on while you advance through the game. Very fast. Stick to one pet, and you'll never have to worry about retraining loyalty, having the wrong kind of food in your pack, or forgetting how you should be using your pet's special attack.

The exception to this is, if you're a serious PvPer, you're going to want more than one pet. A pet fully optimized for PvP is not typically an effective PvE pet. I'll give you an example.

Once upon a time, I decided I wanted in on this PvP scene. I was level 53 at the time, and had a ghostpaw alpha, my wolf main, and broken tooth, my trusty pvp cat. Both were level 52, as I'd been making an effort towards that. I did some quests in Un'Goro with my wolf, who had my typical PvE generalist spec - health, FH, bite, dash, some nature and fire resist - and we solo'd a devilsaur, just for kicks. The 54+ one, not the 53+, I believe.

I came back when my puppy dinged to level up my cat. This is BT with full PvP spec - max shadow and nature resists, full suite of damaging abilities and prowl. In other words, a literal paper tiger and didn't even know growl. This cat is a red beast of DOOM in PvP specced like that, but the devilsaur would have wiped the crater with our ass. We stuck to greens and yellows, and I stayed on mostly autoshot to avoid pulling aggro.

The point of the story is, if you love PvP, and want to do BG from level 10, by all means, use your second stable slot.

Once you hit the endgame, you're likely to want more pets, however. Full raids are a different ballgame than normal PvE, and require more focused specs. For example, the pet I take to Molten Core has full Fire Resist and an armor boost, neither of which I'd ever spend the training points on with a generalist pet. That boar's never seeing the inside of Alterac Valley, that's for sure, but neither would I take him to Blackwing Lair. I've got my wolf with high shadow resist for that. If you're doing more than one instance at once, like trying to learn MC at the same time as Zul'Gurub, and you do Arathi Basin on weekends, you'll probably find yourself making use of all three available pet slots.

In the endgame, then, what's a good second pet? Well, a wolf is perhaps the quintissential raiding pet, and I'm not just saying them because they're my favorite. Pets, particularly for non-BM hunters, are pretty outclassed by real boss fights. A good tactic is to have your wolf sit right by your side and make a macro that ties Furious Howl to Multishot (both on the same 10 second timer). Particularly if you're standing near other hunters, over the course of the raid this can add up to very decent DPS.

Boars are a nice choice as well. They have the fortitude to get in there and dps for a bit with the proper buffs and resists, but more uniquely, they're great at squishy rescue. When a mob peels off from the crowd and attacks your priest, your boar can charge and root it, giving your priest time to step back and stand safely until your tank can get there. And they eat bread. This saves you a LOT of money and means you can toss them into any old fight, because any time they get unhappy you ask your mage buddy for some food.

Windserpents finish off the best raider troika for me, because of their flight and ranged attack. They'll never run through the lava because of poorly programmed pet pathing, and when melee is just too dangerous, you can still send them in close enough for two lightning breaths and then recall them to safety until their focus comes back. Plus THEY EAT BREAD. See above.

I. Q & A

Q: What do vanity pets actually do?
A: Vanity pets will loyally follow you around while you are traveling by foot or mount, regardless of your speed. They'll follow you anywhere, indoors or out, dangerous or otherwise, but they retreat to their cages when you hop a flight (even if the pet can fly).

A small number of vanity pets provide a small buff or debuff when summoned. See the italicized notes of each pet for details.

Q: Where can I get a vanity pet?
A: Vendors, drops, quest rewards, engineering recipes, auction houses, and through special promotions by Blizzard. This guide provides the location of drops and vendors for every known vanity pet. It also explains which pets can be obtained through what quests. Many vanity pets can be purchased through the auction house (AH), but prices greatly vary.

Q: Is there a level requirement for owning a vanity pet?
A: No, however some quests with NC pet rewards will be unavailable to you until you reach an appropriate level.

Q: Can I sell my vanity pet to another player?
A: Many vanity pets are BoP (soulbound on pickup). Others are BoU (soulbound when used). If you haven't summoned the pet, you can sell it or trade it to other players (assuming it was not a BoP item). Most unwanted soulbound pets can be sold to a vendor.

Q: How many vanity pets can I own?
A: You can own as many vanity pets as you wish, but you may only have one active at a time.

Q: Can warlocks and hunters have an non-combat pet active while their combat pet is summoned?
A: Yes. This allows hunters and warlocks to travel the world with their own little posse in tow. Fo' shizzle.

Q: Can I name my vanity pet?
A: Not at this time. But maybe someday... (pretty please Blizzard?)

Q: Do I have to feed my vanity pet?
A: No. Amazingly, these little guys keep on trucking without a drop of water or an ounce of food. They are the envy of all hunters.

Q: Are vanity pets class or faction specific?
A: For the most part, no. Any class or faction can summon any pet. However, some BoP quest reward vanity pets are only available to one faction or another, preventing the opposing faction from ever obtaining that pet. Furthermore, certain mechanical pets are BoP and can only be used by the engineers who build them.

Q: Can my vanity pet be killed?
A: Yes and no. No, mobs and other players cannot kill your vanity pet. Yes, there are ways that you can kill your NC pet if you are creative and sadistic. However, you can always resummon it.

AUTHOR'S NOTE

In real life, I love all kinds of animals. I'm thrilled that the developers of WoW have provided a way for players to enjoy some fantastic and wonderful pets in-game. No, they don't do anything extraordinary. But they do provide ambiance and fun. A rogue with a snake in tow; a moonkin with an owl close behind; a female warlock accompanied by a black cat; a hunter with his trusty "hunting" worg pup. When coupled with certain races, classes or genders, many pets provide a "coolness" factor that can't be reproduced by any other means.

About this guide

This guide will show you how to get your tailoring skill up from 0 to 300. The guide will only use recipe's available at a trainer until 275 and vendor available recipe's from 275 to 300.

This guide only uses recipes that require cloth and vendor bought material (thread, dye). The only exceptions are the vendor bought recipe's to get to 300 which require rugged leather. The leather needed is easily acquired through skinning or the auction house.

This guide does not tell you how to get all the different recipe's from quests, vendors or drops. What you do once you hit 300 is entirely up to you.

This guide is primarily aimed at those who want to switch profession at high level or have high level alts, friends or guild members.

Preparation

You are going to need a lot of linen and wool cloth and huge amounts of silk, mageweave and runecloth. Create an alt storage character to store these amounts of cloth and then farm (or have an alt farm) for the cloth needed. Use the in game mail system to send the cloth to the storage character. You may need more than one storage character. Don't forget to send some gold to the storage character, so she can send the cloth back.

Once you have all the components collected, everything has to be send back to your main character. The mailbox only shows the first 50 items you have in the mail. It also puts the last item send to you on top. So to avoid complications send the components you need first last: i.e the linen cloth are needed first, so these are the last to be send back to your main, after the wool, silk, etc.

The recipe's used require vendor bought components such as threads and dye. These cost gold. To learn recipe's from a trainer also costs gold. The amount of gold needed is approximately 40 to 50 gold if you farm all of the cloth. If you want to buy everything you need from the auction house expect to spend upwards to 250 gold. This does not include gold for recipe's from vendors or the auction house.

Below is a table that shows the amount of cloth needed. The minimum amount column shows the minimum amount needed if you would get a skill point every time you make something. However at some point a recipe will be yellow or even green when you make something so you won't always get a skill point. The estimated amount column deals with this, so try to get the estimated amount of cloth. If you are buying all the cloth you need from the auction house, I suggest getting the minimum amount and only buy more when needed. The numbers in the estimated amount column are rounded up to full stacks of whatever the component stacks up to.

Getting from 1 to 50

Getting from 1 to 50 seems easy enough. Making a bolt of linen cloth greys out at 50, so it looks like this is the easiest way to get to 50. However, since making a bolt of linen cloth becomes yellow at 25 and green at 37, you will most likely make much more bolts than needed to get from 50 and further.

Getting from 50 and further requires at least 70 bolts of linen cloth, so lets make those first and set those aside. If you haven't reached 50 yet, make a bolt of linen cloth and then a linen belt. The linen belt will give a skill point. Repeat this until 50.

Once you hit 50 talk to the appropriate trainer to become Journeyman Tailor. You have to be level 10 to become Journeyman Tailor.

Getting from 50 to 125

First use the bolts of linen cloth set aside earlier to get to 75. Make linen bags to get from 50 to 70. Make the reinforced linen cape to get to 75.

There are two other recipe's that can be used to get from 50 to 70, the heavy linen gloves and the reinforced linen cape. These recipe's are cheaper in components than the linen bag, but since the bag sells for more silver at a vendor (2 silver for the bag versus 29 copper for the gloves and 67 copper for the cape) and you have to make a lot of bolts to get to 50 anyway, I decided to go for the linen bag so you can recoup a bit more of the money you lose wasting material.

At 75 you can train to make bolt of woolen cloth. Bolt of woolen cloth greys out at 105. To get from 105 to 125 you need at least 55 bolts of woolen cloth, so lets make those and see how far we get.

If you haven't reached 105, make 1 bolt of woolen cloth and then make a woolen cape until you do reach 105.

Now use the 55 bolts of woolen cloth made earlier and make gray woolen shirts until 110 and double-stitched woolen shoulders to get from 110 to 125.

Once you hit 125 talk to the appropriate trainer to become Expert Tailor. You have to be level 20 to become Expert Tailor.

Getting from 125 to 200

At 125 you can make bolt of silk cloth, which greys out at 145. Since you're going to need at least 175 bolts of silk cloth for your skill up recipe's you will most likely reach 145 with that, so lets make those bolts of silk cloth.

Make azure silk hoods to get from 145 to 160, silk headbands to get from 160 to 170 and formal white shirts to get from 170 to 175.

At 175 you can make bolt of mageweave which greys out at 185. Later on you're going to need at least 90 bolts of mageweave, so lets make those bolts. This should get you to 185 easily.

Now back to silk. Make Crimson Silk Vests to get from 185 to 200.

Once you hit 200 talk to the appropriate trainer to become Artisan Tailor. You have to be level 35 to become Artisan Tailor.

Getting from 200 to 275

First make some more crimson silk vests to get from 200 to 205 and crimson silk pantaloons to get to 215.

Make black mageweave leggings or vests to get from 215 to 220, black mageweave gloves to get from 220 to 230 and black mageweave headbands or shoulders to get from 230 to 250.

At 250 you can make bolts of runecloth, which greys out at 260. Make bolts of runecloth until you reach 260 skill and use those to make runecloth belts. The runecloth belt recipe becomes yellow at 270, so you should be able to reach 275 using this recipe.

Getting from 275 to 300

Although the runecloth belt recipe greys out at 300 I wouldn't use this recipe to skill up to 300, because the amount of runecloth needed would be huge and thus expensive.

Below is a table with recipe's available from different vendors. These are limited availability recipe's, so you need some luck getting them, but i think they are much more usefull in getting your skill to 300.

Of course there are plenty of dropped recipe's that can get you to 300, but getting those require even more luck than with the vendor available recipe's or spending some money at the auction house.

Make runecloth bags to get to 280 and runecloth gloves to get to 300.

Congratulations, you now have 300 skill in tailoring.

You can use it as a fast track guide. Just ignore the "Your level" bit. I would seriously suggest that you wait until your level 50+ before trying this though, as it'll will takes you ages to complete at lower levels (unless of course you have a couple of level 50+ friends who don't mind grinding mobs for you to skin). I've tried to list mobs that should be yellow or orange for your skinning level. If they are green, move onto the next zone listed.

Please note that even if a mob is red/orange to you, that this DOES NOT guarantee that you'll get a skill up. It's more likely, but not to be expected every time.

Mining 1-300 Guide

What you’re going to need:

Mining skill (obviously). Go see your local mining trainer to get trained.
A mining pick. Can't mine without one (these can also be enchanted if you want, makes absolutely no difference, but it's cool to have. Even if you have your mining pick enchanted the standard mining animation remains the same, so you actually see that nice demonslaying glow you got put on there. You will only see the glow when you equip it like a normal weapon. A player on our server even had a Crusader enchant put on their mining pick and told me that the proc happens when they mine, cant confirm this for sure, but it does seem really pointless).

Optional, but recommended extra: get the cheapest pair of gloves you can find and get them enchanted with +5 mining skill (shouldn't cost you more than 2g, as it takes 3 x Truesilver Bars and 3 x Vision Dust). Don’t bother with the +2 enchant as it's not worth it.
If you’re an engineer then make yourself a Goblin Mining Helmet ( http://www.thottbot.com/index.cgi?i=12859 ) as this will add +5 to your mining skill.

Also, please remember that mining nodes only appear on the side of hills, cliffs, mountains etc. So your unlikely to find any ores in the great rolling plains, unless there is a small hill there. Also note that Darnassus has NO ore whatsoever! So if you’re a Night Elf and want to mine, get your booty over to Darkshore ASAP. So with that in mind, always follow the cliff faces or hillsides.

Got all that? Good, then lets down and dirty, Dwarf style :o)

Mining 1 to 65

Mining Copper

Estimated number of nodes to mine = 30

This bit is easy. Mine about 50 copper and smelt. You can use any of the following suggestions for mining routes or make up your own, as copper is so abundant:

*At level 50, go back to the mining trainer and learn Journeyman Mining.

Horde

· Undead: Start at the entrance to Deathknell, looking out towards Brill. Head South and follow the cliffs all the way round to The Undercity. Skip past UC and keep following the cliffs up to The Bulwark. Now head North up to Scarlet Monastery, hugging the cliffs as you go. When to reach the coast, head west and then south to follow the cliffs down and round to Agamand Mills. Follow those hills south again to get back to your starting point. Average amount of copper ore from this run, should be about 30-40.

· Tauren: Mulgore. The natural geography of this place makes it easy to run around. Just pick a starting point and follow the cliffs all the way around in a circle. Remember to check out the Venture Co mine on your way round. Average amount of copper ore from this run, should be about 40-50.

· Orc & Troll: You could just do whole circuits of Durotar, but there is so much copper round here that small routes are just as productive. My favorite routes are:

· Start at the gates of Orgrimmar and head East towards Skull Rock (make sure you go into Skull Rock and mine the ore there too). Head a short way south to where that Orc is standing on his lonesome, then head back West following the cliff face (keeping the Zep Tower in sight). Carry on over the road and across the top of the canyon and on to the coast. Head North up to the cliff face and then East back to Orgrimmar. I get about 30-40 copper ores from this short run on a good day.

· Start at Razor Hill and head West towards the Quilboar grounds. Hug the cliff face until you reach the river, then head north until you reach Orgrimmar. Head East until you see the first little farmstead, now head south and drop into the canyon. Follow the canyon out and head South East until you reach Razor Hill again. You’ll get about 25-30 copper ores on this route.

Alliancee

· Human: Start at Goldshire and head East following the cliff face to the north of Crystal Lake. When you get the north of the Logging Camp head South. Follow the river to the border of Elwyn forest and Duskwood, then head North West back towards Goldshire (make sure you visit the two mines on this route). This route should net you about 30-40 copper ores.

· Night Elves: Your going to have to go to Darkshore, as Darnassus has no ores whatsoever! So start at Auberdine and head directly east until you reach the cliffs at the edge of the map. Now head south, hugging the cliff face as you go. When you get to the entrance of Ashenvale, head west to the coast and then North back to Auberdine. Head out from Auberdine, directly to the East (same as you did at the start of this route), but when you reach the cliffs this time head north. Just follow the cliffs to the North and back round the coast, heading South again to Auberdine. I find this figure of eight pattern to be easier than taking Auberdine in one whole route, but that’s just me. Feel free to improvise it. Normally get about 40-50 copper ores from this entire route.

· Dwarves and Gnomes: Ah, the home of mining and possibly the best place to start, Dun Morogh! You really don’t need a route around here, copper is everywhere, if you can’t find a decent route yourself, then you’re beyond help! But, I will tell you my favourite route. Start at Kharanos and head to the Wendigo cave (you all know where that is, right?). Clear cave and then continue on West, following the cliff face. Carry on until you hit the main road then head North up to the Frostmane Hold. From there head directly east over to Shimmer Ridge, then North up to Ice Flow Lake. Now follow the cliffs down to Ironforge, on to Misty Pine Refuge and back round to Kharanos. This run normally nets me about 40-50 copper ore.

· Another good run in this area is the Gol’Bolar Quarry. Circle the outside, around the top, then drop down and into the mines. I can get about 20 copper ores on this short run.

Mining 66 – 125

Mining Tin, Silver, Incendicite and Lesser Bloodstone

Estimated number of nodes to mine = 60

This part is a pain in the butt, if you don’t have a mount (well its all a pain in the butt, if you don’t have a mount) as the Tin Veins your going to need to mine are more spread out and not as common as the Copper you just being mining. You also stop getting skill up’s from smelting after about level 85 (Silver is the last thing to give you a skill up). The leg from 100-125 is also pretty bad, as Tin is green at this stage and therefore your getting skill ups at fewer intervals (just pray its a Silver spawn, instead of Tin, as this will still be yellow to you).

Horde & Alliance i*even on PvP servers you can still use these routes and areas.

Easiest way to level up to 125, is to go to The Wetlands and find Thelgan Rock (its near the entrance to Dun Algaz - 53,64 for those with location addons). There is a cave there, that is full of spiders and a quest ore called Incendicite. This is an Alliance only quest, but Horde can still mine the ore. Now the ore itself is worthless and only used to complete the quest, but you can mine it from level 65 until about level 125. The nodes respawn quickly and you can level up your mining in less than an hour if your the only one in the cave.
If your Alliance and want to do the quest, go see Pilot Longbeard in The Miltary Ward in Ironforge for the starting quest. He'll send you to speak to Pilot Stonegear in Kharanos, who then gives you the quest.

Lesser Bloodstone: go to the cave in north east Arathi Highlands, just to the east of Hammerfall (path to cave is at 80,40) and mine the nodes inside. It's used as part of a quest chain that's started in Booty Bay by Corporal Kaleb (in the tavern). You only need to keep four of them for the quest.

I actually combine two of my routes here, if I have time. They are as follows:

· Start at The Crossroads and head West towards the entrance of Stonetalon Mountains. Then head south, hugging the cliffs as you go. Follow the cliffs all the way down south until you reach Blackthorn Ridge, just north of Razorfen Kraul. Follow the cliff to the main road and over. Continue heading east and then north up to the entrance to Dustwallow Marsh. Carry on going north until you reach Northwatch Hold and then head up to the Raptor Hills and the Quilboar Village. Now head back to The Crossroads.

· Start at the bottom of the Great Lift in Thousand Needles and head northwest up to Camp Ethok, following the cliff face as you go. Continue on till you reach the border of Thousand Needles and Feralas, then head over to the other side of Thousand Needles and follow the cliffs south. Make a detour when you reach Highperch, as there are a couple of Tin / Iron veins here. Carry on heading south until you reach The Screeching Canyon. Have a quick run into the cave here and pick the couple veins that normally spawn here. Continue south past Freewind Post and all the way to Windbreak Canyon. Now head north, again hugging the cliff face as you go and make your way up to Splithoof Crag. There is a Centaur Village here, with a cave that can have 4 or 5 veins (both Iron and Tin). Mine it. Carry on north past Darkcloud Pinnacle and back to the Great Lift.

Combine the two routes above for a 90-minute (ish) trek that can net 100+ copper, 50-70 Tin and 30-40 Iron.

There only two other places that I bother mining for Tin and that is:

· Hillsbrad Foothills: No route here, just do full circuits.

· Ashenvale: Again no real route, just do full circuits.

But you could also try the following places:

· Wetlands: Start at Dun Modr and follow the cliffs to the southeast down towards Raptor Ridge. From here either go around Grim Batol, if you’re a high enough level to cope, or follow the cliffs towards Mosshide Fen and onto The Igan Rock. Once there head over to Dun Algaz, then north to Angerfang Encampment and onto Whelgars Excavation Site. Now head north past Ironbeards Tomb and back to Dun Modr.

· Redridge Mountains: Start in Lakeshire, head north to Rethban Caverns and follow up to Renders Camp. Head south and follow cliffs to Alther’s Mill. Carry on east towards The Tower of Ilgalar and then loop round that and to the south, heading towards Renders Valley. Carry on to Lakeridge Highway and over to The Three Corners. Now head back to Lakeshire.

Mining 126 – 1755

Mining Iron and Gold

Estimated number of nodes to mine = 100

*At level 125, go back to the mining trainer and learn Expert Mining.

From now on both Horde and Alliance can follow this guide easily, so I’ll won’t have separate sections.

· Do the Thousand Needle route above, but take in The Shimmering Flats as well this time.

· Desolace: If you’re Horde, start at Shadowprey Village and head into the Valley of Spears. Follow that through and out and over to the Kodo Graveyard (you could do a quick circle or move on here). Head east to the Magram Village and loop round and down to Shadowbreak Ravine. Follow that through and onto the Mannoroc Coven to the west. Carry on west to the Gelkis Village and make your way back to Shadowprey Village. If you’re Alliance, then start at Nijel’s Point and head southeast to Sargeron, then south to the Kolkar Village. From here you could carry on down south and complete the Horde run or head west to the Kodo Graveyard. From the Kodo Graveyard, head northwest to Ethel Rethor and then northeast ish to Thunderaxe Fortress. Follow round to the north and up to Tethris Aran and then back east to Nijel’s Point.

· Ashenvale: start at the entrance to Ashenvale from The Barrens and head to the west. Skip round the Battleground entrance (only if your Horde) and carry on to the river. Follow the river north, trying to keep as close to bank as possible, so that you can see spawns on both sides of the river. Keep following the river till you get to just before Xavian in the north. Now head east to the next river and cross over to Saytrnaar and onto Forest Song (watch out for those elites). Now head south through the Warsong Logging Camp if your Horde or skirt around it if your Alliance and continue on down through Felfire Hill and onto Demon Fall Canyon. Now head west through Nightsong Woods and back to your start point.

· Badlands: start at Apocryphens Rest and head south to Camp Cagg, then east to Mirage Flats. Now follow cliff face all way to Camp Boff, past Agmonds End. Head north past Dustwind Gulch and onto Hammertoes Digsite and then northwest to Angor Fortress. Now follow the cliffs west all the way to Kargath (or just before it, if Alliance) and back down to Apocryphens Rest. Remember to divert off slightly at each point where the Rock Elementals gather and do a quick tour of their spawn spots.

· Arathi Highlands: start at Thandoll Span and head east then north to Boulderfist Hall. Follow cliffs round to Witherbark Village and continue north up to Hammerfall. If you’re Horde, loop round the back of Hammerfall and continue on to the west. If your Alliance, go as far Drywhisker Gorge (remember to check inside, both Horde and Alliance) and then loop round Hammerfall to the south and back up to the northern cliffs. Follow cliffs west to Dabyries Farmstead and then head south past Refuge Point and back down to Thandoll Span.

· Alterac Mountains: start at the entrance to the Ruins of Alterac and head west past the Growless Cave. Follow the ridge around the ruins and keep going to the end. Now drop down to the coast (you can make a series of jumps to get down, without dying). Now head north to Dandreds Fold. Head east through The Uplands, zigzagging between the two cliff faces as you go until you get to Strahnbrad. Now follow the road back to your starting point. If you’re a high enough level, go into the ruins and do a quick sweep.

· Stranglethorn Vale: couple of small but good routes here. First one is to the north of Grom’Gol Base Camp. Start at Nessingwarys Expedition and follow the hills around the front of the three sets of ruins (Kalai, Balal and Zuuldaia) and then back round to the north of them and return to Nessingwarys Expedition. Second route starts at Kurzens Compound to the north of Zul’Gurub entrance. After a quick circle around the compound, head south down to Mosh’Ogg Ogre Mound. If you’re a high level, then do a sweep of the cave and carry on south to the Ruins of Zulmamwe. Keep heading south past the Crystalvein Mine and the Ruins of Aboraz. Carry on into the Mistvale Valley, now heading west towards the main road. From here either head to Booty Bay or follow the road back up north to your starting point.

· Swamp of Sorrows: couple of nice little spots here. Check around Ithariuss Cave where the Green Whelps are and also around The Stagalbog. Remember to check inside the Stagalbog.

Mining 176 – 250

Mining Mithril and Truesilver

Estimated number of nodes to mine = 125

*At level 225, go back to the mining trainer and learn Artisan Mining.

So now we come the real money making stuff, Mithril. This stuff is used in such quantities by Engineering and Blacksmithing that you will always sell what you mine for a good profit.

· Blasted Lands: just do full circuits, simple.

· Searing Gorge: again, just do full circuits. You can do what I do and do a full circuit of the perimeter of Searing Gorge, then drop down into The Cauldron and do a circuit of that (inside and outside). Also remember that at level 230, you can mine Dark Iron, so pick that up too.

· Badlands: two good places here. First is Camp Cagg. Just do a circuit round it, taking in the Rock Elementals spawn point as you go. Second place is Lethlor Ravine. If you start by the Master Dragonscale Leatherworker and head into the Ravine and loop round to the north and back out and south past Uldaman back entrance, then you’ll pick up a good amount of Mithril.

· The Hinterlands: start at Aerie Peak and follow the cliff face to the south and east. Now just go around the south cliff face until your get past Jintha’Alor, then north up to Seradane and then west back to Aerie Peak.

· Western Plaguelands: do circuits of the Ruins of Andorhal.

· Azshara: start at the Legash Encampment and head east to the Bitter Reaches. Loop round to the north and back west along the coast past the Jagged Reef and then back down to the Lagash Encampment again.

· Winterspring: start at the Timbermaw tunnel entrance and follow the cliffs to the east past the Hot Springs and all the way over to Starfall Village. Just before you get there, head south to Lake Kel’Theril and then follow the cliffs west all the way back to your starting point.

· Felwood: only if your there. Don’t go out of way to mine here, but if you happen to be in the area (i.e. grinding Timbermaw rep) then look out for a few Mithril nodes here.

· Stonetalon Mountains: quick circuit of The Charred Vale can net you 10-15 Mithril ores.

· Desolace: grab yourself some underwater breathing potions and head to Ranzajar Isle. Theres a good number of Mithril nodes in the sunken ruins round here and very few people mine them. You can also take a run through the Valley of Spears and down to Mannoroc Coven to pick up the Mithril nodes there.

· Tanaris: bit of a long one this, but can be well worth it. Do full circuits of Tanaris, but drop down into The Noxious Lair and The Gaping Chasm to pick up the nodes that virtually nobody mines, unless they are questing in there.

Mining 251 – 3000

Mining Thorium

Estimated number of nodes to mine = 160

This is the reason you took up mining, Thorium. What a moneymaker. Your also looking to get Arcane Crystal from the rich veins, which will sell for about 20g each (depends on your server).

· Un’goro Crater: just go round and round the crater, making sure you drop down into The Slithering Scar and take a detour into Fire Plume Ridge. There is loads of Thorium to be had here, which is why its farmed constantly, so you will be competing for nodes here.

· Azshara: start at the Ravencrest Monument and follow the coastal cliff all the way round to the Tower of Eldra. Then head back west to the Legash Encampment in a zigzag pattern from coast to coast. You may also want to drop into the Ruins of Eldarath and pick up the couple of nodes that spawn there. Azshara isn’t the greatest place to mine Thorium, due to its natural geography, but that does mean its less popular and therefore your likely to have less competition.

· Winterspring: start at Everlook and head south to the Ice Thistle Hills. Make a quick sweep of the yeti cave here and then back out and to the south. Keep going till you get to Owl Wing Thicket and make a small circuit there. Now you can either carry on south into Frostwhisper and Darkwhisper Gorge’s if your happy about avoiding the elites there, or you can head west over to Mazthoril for the slightly lower level elite area. Once at Mazthoril, you can either sweep the main cave (only recommended for Druids, Rogues or Hunters) or carry on up to Lake Kel’Theril and back round to Everlook.

· Blasted Lands: not a massive amount of Thorium to be had here, but good for a quick run, whilst your looking for Mithril.

· Searing Gorge: same as the Mithril run above.

· Burning Steppes: No real decent run here. Just do full circuits picking up Dark Iron as well.

· Eastern Plaguelands: start at Tyr’s Hand and head north past Lights Hope Chapel. Go past The Noxious Glade and onto Northdale. Head west to Northpass Tower and then south to Blackwood Lake. Carry on south to the Pestilent Scar and then onto Lake Mereldar and back to your starting point. You may want to throw in a quick diversion to The Fungal Vale, in between Northpass Tower and Blackwood Lake.

· Western Plaguelands: start at The Weeping Cave and head south to Gahrrons Withering and then west to Dalsons Tears. Head northwest from here to the edge of Felstone Field and follow the cliffs north into the Northridge Lumber Camp. Follow the path up towards Hearthglen and then double back once you reach the watchtower. Head south and follow the cliffs all the way back round to The Weeping Cave.

Patch 1.11 notes:

Smelting Bronze, Silver and Iron will give increases to mining skill for somewhat longer than they used to.

Haven't had a chance to test out how this affects this guide, but I'm assuming it makes that area between 90 and 125 a lot easier to level up.

Notes:
In general I have tried to keep as much as possible to the main normal leather types, light, medium, heavy, thick and rugged. This is because it always easier to buy them on the auction house, whereas other ingredients are more difficult to obtain, and therefore more expensive. I haven't mentioned the ingredients that can be bought from vendors, since they are easy to obtain. I ran into trouble around the 180 mark, where most recipes require extra ingredient and I bought whatever had the cheapest buyout on the AH to get me there. Have a look to see what's cheapest at the time for you.

I could have used a lot less thick leather and started on rugged armour kits at 250, but at that time the price of rugged leather was high enough for it to be worth using huge amounts of thick instead (probably because I did this the week before the Darkmoon Faire was in town). If you can get the rugged leather cheaper it's probably worth switching earlier (5 rugged leather Vs 15 thick leather).

I have mostly kept to trainer taught recipes. The exceptions to this are the recipes gained through the leatherworking quests and the recipes for Wicked Leather Bracer and Headband, which I bought on the auction house for 5 and 2 gold respectively (you could substitute Wicked Leather Gauntlet for Wicked Leather Bracers. The recipe is vendor bought from leatherworking suppliers http://www.thotbott.com/?i=11493 it's limited supply though, and after 20 minutes of camping for it I gave up).

I hope that this helps. I know that there are a few places where it could have been done a bit better but I don't think I made too many glaring errors.

Herbalism 1-300 Guide

Bear in mind, that where I've specified a particular herb to pick, do not avoid picking anything else you see. Pick everything.

I've also tried to list multiple alternatives for each part of the levelling up guide. This should hopefully allow you to choose the area thats best for you or give you alternatives if an area is already being farmed by other players.

1 - 50

Collecting Silverleaf and Peacebloom

· Mulgore. Just do circuits round the base of Thunderbluff picking Silverleaf and Peacebloom.

· Do circuits around Dolanaar heading South East around the lake and back upto to Dolanaar, if your Alliance or complete circuits of Elwynn Forest.

· For Undead, try starting at Solliden Farmstead in Tirisfal Glades, run north to the mills, loop round and back south past Stillwater Pond and onto Cold Hearth Manor and Nightmare Vale. Then back up to Solliden Farmstead again. (Thanks to Olmolmtyr for info)

You can find Peacebloom and Silverleaf in abundance around your main starting area (not in it, around it). So the first 50 levels should be really easy.

51 - 70

Collecting Mageroyal and Earthroot

· Go west from Crossroads then head north before the entrance to Stonetalon Mountains and follow around to where the harpies are, then head east back to the Gold road and then south to Crossroads again, picking Mage Royal, Earthroot, Peacebloom and Silverleaf as you go.

· For Alliance start in the north of Westfall and follow the coast south to Deadmines and then head straight to Sentinel Hill and back up to the north again, picking Mageroyal.

· You can also run circuits of Gol'Bolar Quarry in Dun Morogh, collecting Earthroot as you go. (Thanks to Flareon for that info)

71 - 100

Collecting Briarthorn

· Same route as above (for Horde), but extend it east to Sludge Fen, picking Briarthorn now.
You could actually extend your runs to encompass the whole of The Barrens, as this area is absolutely chock full of Briarthorn and other herbs. It's possibly the best area to get your herbalism trained up.

· Southern part of Silverpine Forest, from Pyrewood Village to the Entrance to Hillsbrad Foothills and back again.

· Same route as above (for Alliance) or do circuits of Twilight Grove in Duskwood.

· Also for Alliance, just wander north to south in Darkshore for loads of Briarthorn.

· The eastern side of Loch Modan is also a great place for Briarthorn.

· You could also do circuits of Lakeshire in Redridge Mountains.

101 - 115

Collecting Bruiseweed

· Start at the Ramparts in Ashenvale and head north-east to Splintertree Post (dont follow road, try to go as straight as you can, you'll find more herbs that way), then head west from Splintertree Post towards the first bridge. Head south from here past the Moonwell and then back west to the ramparts when you reach the edge of the map. Pick Bruiseweed as you go.

· Stonetalon Mountains. Go to Camp Aparaje, head west to the Grimtotem Post, then south to Malaka'jin, then east to the Greatwood Vale. Nice run of Bruiseweed there.

· The Field of Giants in Southern Barrens or between the two Razorfens.

· You can also circle to the north of Mystral Lake for Bruiseweed or to the West of Astranaar in Ashenvale.

· Windshear Crag in Stonetalon Mountains.

· The eastern coast of Loch Modan.

· Circuits of Stonewatch keep in Redridge Mountains.

116 - 125

Collecting Wild Steelbloom

· Go to Stonetalon Peak and do circuits of the small area around the Alliance Town and the Talon Den collecting Wild Steelbloom.

· For higher levels do full circuits of Arathi Highlands, sticking to the mountain sides (as this is where you'll find Wild Steelbloom)

· Nek'mani Wellspring in Stranglethorn Vale.

· The Zuuldaia Ruins, north of Grom'gol in Stranglethorn Vale.

· Go from Black Channel Marsh in the Wetlands to the Angerfang Encampment, taking in Whelgar's Excavation Site as you go.

· Go from The Field of Giants in southern Barrens to the two Razorfens and back up again.

· Between The Great Lift and Highperch in Thousand Needles.

*from now on your going to be doing circuits of the full map, so you'll have to learn your own paths.

Collecting Kingsblood

· Full circuits of Ashenvale to collect Kingsblood.

Collecting Sungrass

· Full circuits of Felwood to collect Sungrass. This is actually more of a zig-zag pattern, rather than a circuit (also try to do the Cleansing Felwood quest and pick up Windblossom Berries, Nightdragons, Whipper Roots and the odd Songflower Serenade buff when needed).

· Feralas is also a great place to get Sungrass. You can make two circuits here. One that starts in the very north west at The Ruins of Ravenwind and runs south to The High Wilderness and one around The Lower Wilds, Lariss Pavillion, Grimtotem Compound and Woodpaw Hills, all near Camp Mojache.

· You can do circuits around The Forlorn Ridge in Azshara.

· You can try the main path through The Hinterlands too. As you follow it one way, stay about 50 metres from the path and then do the same the other way.

251 - 270

Collecting Gromsblood

· Full circuits of Felwood to collect Gromsblood. See above notes.

· Do circuits of Mannoroc Coven in Desolace for Gromsblood too.

· Full circuits of Blasted Lands.

· Demon Fall Canyon in Ashenvale, not many people bother with this area, so although its small, it can be good for farming Gromsblood.

271 - 285 or 290 (see below)

Collecting Dreamfoil

· Full circuits of Un'goro Crater to collect Dreamfoil.

· Two good routes in Azshara are:

First Aid 1-300 Guide

If you don't have used First Aid yet - then get on with it - because it can heal 2000 HP over 8 sec.

1. Go to Westfall and kill Defias of all kind at Moonbroke and loot all the Linen Cloth. You need 120 - 130 Linen Cloth.

2. Go inside Dead mines (just beside Moonbroke) and kill all inside, and loot all the Wool. You need 100 Wool.

Get the recipe Linen Bandage at First Aid Trainer.

Use your Linen Cloth to get you your skill to 40.

Get the recipe Heavy Linen Bandage at First Aid Trainer.

Use the rest of Linen Cloth to get your skill to 80.

Get the recipe Wool Bandage at First Aid Trainer.

Use your Wool to get you your skill to 115.

Get the recipe Heavy Wool Bandage at First Aid Trainer.

Use rest of Wool to get you your skill to 150.

3. Go to Alterac Mountains and kill Crushridge Mauler (they have nice drop percent) and loot all the Silk cloth.

You need 100 Silk Cloth.

Get the recipe Silk Bandage at First Aid Trainer.

Use your Silk Cloth to get you your skill to 180.

Get the recipe Heavy Silk Bandage at First Aid Trainer.

Use your Silk Cloth to get you your skill to 225.

4. Go to Dustwallow Marsh and find the First Aid Trainer there and do the quest.

(You have to have 225 in First aid and be lvl 40+)

He give you some bandage, you have to use them on the soldiers. The TRICK is ..

Click on a soldier, and start bandage him. At soon as the bandaging begin, turn round and find the next soldier, and click on him.

When your are finished bandage the first, run to the one you clicked on and start bandage him, and turn find the next and so on.

When finished with the quest the first aid trainer give you Mageweave Bandage and Heavy Mageweave Bandage.

5. Go to Feralas and kill all the Woodpaw and loot the Mageweave silk. You need 100 Mageweave silk.

Use your Mageweave silk to get you your skill to 250.

Get the recipe runecloth bandage at First Aid Trainer (in Dustwallow Marsh)

6. Go to Eastern Plaguelands and farm runecloth - you just all you need.

Use your runecloth to get you your skill to 290. (or is it only 280?)

Engineering 1-300 Guide

Okay. I decided to pick up engineering, Here's the guide that I created last night, trying to spend the least amount of gold I could. I must admit that it's about 70 gold for EVERYthing, But in the end, you'll have like 20-25 gold in your pocket. This is the Quick and Dirty way. If you can't keep up with the bill, I suggest getting mining, as it alleviates nearly 90% of your costs when you just straight mine to 300.

First is the shopping list of all items I used in my powerlevel. You WILL have leftovers on most things but I padded for the unlucky.

Next is the List itself. What to skill up on until the level desired. For instance, 1-40 means stop doing it when you get your 40th profession point. Next, what typically you can do with the item. Then, AHed ingredients and finally the ingredients in ONE make of the crafted item.

"Discombulator Ray":
1.You need a DELTA ACCESS security card. It's a low % drop in gnomeregan, so getting it is the hardest part. I've found 3 off of the mobs coming from the back door. You can also find it from AH though in some cases. The important part about delta security card is that it is not BoP, so once you have gotten your schematic, sell it to someone else.

2. You must have 160 engineering.

3. Learn the schematic directly from 3500-D terminals on the way to Thermaplugg from the back door, in the engineering labs.

"Schematics: Repair bot 74A":
Learn this from a scroll on the ground next to Golem Lord Argelmach in BRD at 300 engineering. (First of all, you'll need the Shadowforge Key.

1. Take your first left, unlock the gate, run up to the gate on the right, unlock that, run up to the door on the left, unlock it.

2. Walk up to the big gear in this room, and unlock the chain.

3. Run up the ramp in this room, take the left up the stairs, then follow the hallways. You'll come to a room with about 4 fire elementals, stairs going down on the left, and a ramp going down on the right. Go right.

4. Ahead of you will be many non-elite gnomes and elite elementals standing around. Go straight down from the ramp until you come to a room with a named, and two elementals guarding him.

5. The plans are to your right.)

It takes 12 Thorium Bars, 4 Rugged Leather, 1 Fused Wiring, 2 Elemental Earth, and 1 Elemental Fire. It has only 1 charge before it is expended. Not cheap.

---Types of Artisan Engineering---

[Edit: There are three types of engineering. Goblin, Gnomish and regular Artisan engineering. Unless an engineering item SPECIFICALLY states that it needs "Goblin Engineering (x)" or "Gnomish Engineering (x)" it is free for anyone to use. This means that Gnomish can use Goblin Jumper Cables XL and gnomes make whatever they make (d'oh, you'd think I'd remember what gnomes make with 300 gnomish) and share them with the Goblin engineers. Just check thottbot or wherever to be sure.]

There is a quest starter for Artisan; (Tinkerwiz in Ratchet (observatory) for Horde, and Lilliam Sparkspindle in Stormwind for Alliance.)
The Master Gnome engineer is in Booty Bay.
The Master Goblin engineer is in Gadgetzan. These trainers will give you a task to complete to join
that society. Note that you don't need to choose either, as it is not linked to learning
artisan engineering at level 35 at all.

Goblin is the realm of BOOM. You get a wider variety of and more powerful explosives. Unfortunately the dragon gun and the mortar still trigger the shared explosive reuse timer, though they are on separate cooldowns.

Goblin engineering produces the following:

1) (205) Goblin mining hat (AC 190, +15 sta, +5 mining, mail armor, BoP) (You no take candle!)

2) (205) Goblin construction hat (AC 44, +15 fire resist, cloth, BoP) Use: absorb 300 to 500 fire damage for 1 minute.

3) (205) Goblin sapper charge (explosive, limited use) Damage enemies around you for a lot while damaging you for slightly less.

4) (205) Goblin Rocket Fuel recipe (creates a recipe) create recipes for alchemists, who in turn can supply you with goblin rocket fuel, necessary for some schematics.

5) (205) Goblin Mortar (explosive, 6 uses) Has a minimum and maximum range. Binds on equip, so you can recharge your own mortar (using the Mortar: Reloaded schematic gained at the same time) for significantly fewer resources than a new mortar, but cannot recharge anyone else's as it is soulbound to them. Also worth noting is that this item apparently still causes a "stun" effect instead of a "disorient" effect, which is somewhat more useful. However, the radius is smaller than listed, probably 6 yards instead of 10.

6) (225) Goblin Rocket Boots (AC 41, cloth) These boots are one of the few items usable by those without the engineering skill. They allow fast running for a short period of time, but are prone to explosion.

7) (230) Goblin Bomb Dispenser (trinket, BoP) Can create one bomb that behaves as an exploding sheep, every 30 minutes.

8) (235) The Big One (explosive, 2 uses) A massive bomb that deals high damage in a huge radius. Has a longer than usual activation time.

9) (240) Goblin Dragon Gun (trinket, BoP) A 10-second channel creates a cone of flame that deals damage each second.

10(?) (245) Goblin Rocket Helmet (AC 50, +15 sta, cloth) Allows you to charge an enemy, knocking it unconscious for 30 seconds and yourself for less time. Damage ends the effect.
Gnomish is the realm of devices. Trinkets for every occasion. If you are satisfied with the amount of explosives from standard engineering, go gnomish for utility.

Gnomish engineering produces the following:

1) (205) Gnomish Shrink Ray (trinket) temporarily reduces target's attack power by 250. this can also backfire on the user, causing them to shrink or grow.

2) (205) Inlaid mithril cylinder plans (creates a recipe) creates plans for blacksmiths, who in turn can provide you with mithril cylinders, necessary for some schematics.

3) (210) Gnomish Goggles (AC 45, +9 agi, +9 sta, +9 spi, cloth, BoP) goggles with agility

4) (210) Gnomish Net-O-Matic Projector (trinket) Roots target for 10 seconds, 10 minute cooldown. Can backfire and root the user instead.

5) (215) Gnomish Harm Prevention belt (AC 66, +6 sta, leather) Use: blocks 500 damage over the next minute, but can also temporarily remove the user from reality.

6) (225) Gnomish rocket boots (AC 41, cloth) requires engineering to use, but cannot be destroyed like the goblin version.

7) (230) Gnomish Battle Chicken (trinket, BoP) summons a combat chicken for 90 seconds. 30 minute cooldown.

8) (235) Gnomish mind control cap (AC 50, +14 spi, cloth) allows mind control of your target for a short time.

9) (240) Gnomish death ray (trinket, BoP) a 4-second channel deals damage to you each second, and then releases more than the total amount at your target. Aggros as you start channeling.
Those are the big differences I know of. It's purely a matter of preference. Keep in mind that aside from the ones that are Bind on Pickup, you can trade/buy to get most of the other's products!

How to change from one specialisation to another

Go to Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris. To the north is a small hut. Inside is a Gnome called Narain Soothfancy. Have a look at the book on the little table in the right hand corner. Right click on it and you get to choose what kind of specialization you want. Hope this helps.
